Seven years after Massive Attack's last studio album, the trip-hop pioneers return with the much-anticipated Heligoland. The latest effort features founding members Robert "3D" Del Naja and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall collaborating with an array of popular guest vocalists, including brit-pop superstar Damon Albarn, Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, reggae favorite Horace Andy, Elbow's Guy Garvey and Hope Sandoval. All 10 tracks can be heard at NPR Music's exclusive stream: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123026141
The next full preview released today turns to electronic rock's next generation. In a rural upstate New York studio, the duo Phantogram crafts dreamy pop songs by melding electronic loops, shoegaze and soul. The group's first long-player, eyelid movies, can be heard in its entirety here: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123085620
On his new album, acclaimed jazz star Lionel Loueke continues his meteoric rise with help from some friends. He appropriately titled the record Mwaliko (Swahili for invitation) as it presents a series of intimate duets with guests Angelique Kidjo, vocalist/bassist Esperanza Spalding, vocalist/bassist Richard Bona and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Loueke's duets, as well as three new songs with his longtime trio, are available now: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123086141
Throughout February, NPR Music's "Exclusive First Listen" series continues with more full album previews of prominent indie and classical releases: an island-hopping exploration of the natural world from folk-rock band Shearwater in The Golden Archipelago (February 8-23), the beauty of Similes from ambient artist Eluvium (February 15-23) and a new collection of Essential Chopin featuring the classical composer’s greatest masterpieces (February 15-23).
