NPR NAMES BOB KEMPF
VICE PRESIDENT, PUBLIC INTERACTIVE

NPR announced today that Bob Kempf, former Vice President of Product and Technology at Boston.com, has been appointed to the position of Vice President of Public Interactive (PI), a Boston-based application services provider for all of public media that NPR acquired in 2008. He officially began his new job yesterday.

Under Kempf's leadership, PI's mission will be broadened to help stations develop content, expand their online audience and identify new revenue opportunities in their markets. The group will work closely with NPR's award-winning digital media group to deepen the collaboration between NPR and member stations and further NPR's goal of developing a multi-platform local-national news network.

"Bob's experience at Boston.com, where he helped drive significant traffic gains, will be invaluable as we work with NPR member stations to develop online audience," said Kinsey Wilson, senior vice president and general manager for NPR Digital Media.

As Vice President, Product and Technology for Boston.com he oversaw development of one of the nation's largest local media web sites. Kempf has 15 years experience in local online publishing that spans digital ad sales, business development, e-commerce, product and technology development and business strategy. At Boston.com the online companion of the Boston Globe -- he quickly moved to re-energize the brand as a "local information retailer," with journalism at its core but with expanded features that created opportunities to aggregate content from other sources and convene local communities. He has been developing and implementing Internet strategies for local news companies since 1999 including serving as Vice President of Interactive Media for Gatehouse Media MA, and as Director of Internet Product Development for Ottaway Newspapers, Inc., a subsidiary of Dow Jones.

Public Interactive is a Boston-based technology and services group that was acquired by NPR in August 2008 to serve the digital needs of NPR member stations. PI gives stations across the country the resources to introduce greater functionality, engage in new community partnerships, and generate more value in the digital space while leveraging limited resources.

Under Kempf's leadership the group's mission will be broadened to help stations develop content, expand their online audience and identify new revenue opportunities in their markets. It will work closely with NPR's award-winning digital media group to deepen the collaboration between NPR and member stations and further NPR's goal of developing of creating a multi-platform local-national news network.
