Applications are being accepted through July 1, 2011, with the selected fellow to begin in the fall of 2011. Professional journalists with at least three but no more than five years experience in any medium (preference given to radio experience) are eligible to apply. Above the Fray is the brainchild of the John Alexander Project, which was founded in the spirit of the late journalist John Alexander, and dedicated to innovative journalism. Alexander was in Chongqing, China, reporting for Koppel On Discovery in December 2007, when he died at age 26 as a result of sudden heart failure.
The John Alexander Project Board of Advisors includes Tom Bettag, Richard Harris, Jonathan King, Ted Koppel, Martha Raddatz and Ari Shapiro.
