NPR LAUNCHES NEW OVERNIGHT NEWS SERVICE
Washington, DC - National Public RadioNPR announced today a new addition to its news programming line-up. WRN from NPR, a new overnight service, combines English language reports from the world's finest public broadcasters with live top-of-the-hour newscasts from NPR in a package designed exclusively for American listeners. Produced by WRN, London, the service includes programming from Radio Africa, Radio Netherlands, Radio Budapest, and many others. This is the first time NPR will offer original news and feature programming stream throughout the night.
Karl Miosga, Managing Director of London based WRN said, "WRN is excited to offer this diverse program service to public radio stations and listeners in the United States. Our product is unique. Pairing the diverse international offerings with live NPR newscasts makes for an unparalleled service."
Jeffrey Dvorkin, NPR's Vice President of News, carried a similar service from WRN when he was news chief of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He spearheaded the NPR initiative, saying "Public Radio listeners in Canada had an extremely positive response to WRN overnight. I'm looking forward to having a similar impact here in the U.S."
WRN serves as the distributor for NPR programming in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Flagship programs such as All Things Considered® and Morning Edition® reach millions of listeners internationally via a combination of satellite dish, cable, and FM radio stations.
WRN was founded in 1992 by three former staff members of the BBC and features programs from 21 of the world's leading public service broadcasters. In addition to the new NPR service, WRN offers 24-hour program streams -- WRN1 (English language), WRN2 (multi-lingual), and WRN3 (German language) – that reach listeners in 58 countries. They include news programming from Africa, Europe, the United States, and Russia as well as documentaries, health programs, and business reports.
