About NPR: Chain Letters and Myths

Hoax E-mail:
"On NPR's Morning Edition last week, Nina Totenberg said that if the Supreme Court supports Congress, it is in effect the end of the National Public Radio (NPR), NEA & the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). PBS, NPR and the arts are facing major cutbacks in funding...."

Never happened:
"Marine Corps General Reinwald was interviewed on the radio the other day and you have to read his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children....It is a portion of National Public Radio (NPR) interview..."

In 1995, two students at the University of Northern Colorado started an e-mail petition citing a mythical report by Nina Totenberg about funding cuts to public broadcasting. For more information, you may read the University's statement on this issue.

Public broadcasting continues to build on the momentum generated by listeners and viewers as new challenges arise. Please remember to support public radio and contribute to your local NPR member station.

There also a story going around about a reporter for NPR who interviewed a General Reinwald. This "interview" is a long standing Internet hoax. It began as a spoof on the BBC and made its way to the U.S. about 8 years ago.

That story has never aired on NPR and in checking with the Pentagon, we were told they have no record of a "General Reinwald" ever having served in any branch of the armed forces.
