Free jazz"American music" trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith had quite a prolific year on disc in 2009: three new CD releases — one of them the 2-CD Spiritual Dimensions on Cuneiform, which I'm currently working on and enjoying — and two reissues from Nessa Records. (Aside: Nessa is back?) Jazziz has splashed him all over the cover of their magazine, which you can now browse digitally through a fancy new Flash interface. You can zoom in and out, there are plenty of slickly embedded audio and video clips, and just about every headline or advertisement is a link to something. I don't find it quite as convenient as a well-designed "traditional" news site, but it does update the look and feel of an actual magazine with hyperlinks — i.e. it has its charms. And, you know, it's free. [Jazziz: Digital Edition, January 2010]
