Jazz Museum Bix Eiben Hamburg

Internet, circa 1998.

Only recently did the private collection behind the Jazz Museum Bix Eiben Hamburg become public. But what a collection: 95,000 78s, 75,000 LPs, thousands of tapes, books, obscure recording formats (piano rolls, Edison records, reel-to-reel tape, etc.) memorabilia and other unique ephemera. Now, a bunch of it has been digitized for online exhibition. The museum's strength lies in early jazz — at the top, you're greeted by 24 on-demand episodes of the old Jazz-Revisited radio program, and there are tons of anecdotes and music clips. Their weakness lies in their Web 2.no page design — lots of scrolling, automatic playing, etc. — which isn't assisted by the fact that it's a German Web site in translation. But if you're at all curious about pre-war jazz, there's way, way too much stuff here to not look. (H/T Chris Albertson) [Jazz Museum Bix Eiben Hamburg: Home Page (English edition)]
