David Karsten Daniels: Thoreau-ing it out there.

Some of us at A Blog Supreme are big fans of the Richmond, Va. jazz scene. And among its leading lights are Fight The Big Bull, a fun little big band which NPR Music even recorded last year with Steven Bernstein. Them dudes are about to release a whole bunch of music on the world, most notably their sophomore LP All Is Gladness In The Kingdom, recorded with Bernstein. (It's quite good, we declare.) The fall also brings a disc called Live Slow Die Old, made with the eclectic Karl Blau and Chicago bass-clarinetist Jason Stein. Add to that a live performance with their comrades-in-beards in the band Megafaun and everyone's favorite falsetto folkie Bon Iver, and you pretty much guarantee that this isn't the only time you'll hear about Richmond jazz in this space this year.

But first: we relay news that the singer-songwriter David Karsten Daniels recently made a new album with Fight The Big Bull, and that it's coming out this summer. In fact, you can follow Daniels' thoughts on the entire arranging, rehearsal and recording process on his MySpace blog — we recommend you hit the YouTube rehearsal tapes he posted for a taste. I Mean To Live Here Still is a series of grand settings of Henry David Thoreau poems; you can download the horn-y DKD + FTBB take on "[The] Funeral Bell" by giving FatCat Records your e-mail address. We recommend this. [FatCat Records: David Karsten Daniels Mailing List]
