Lee Mergner, editor-in-chief of JazzTimes, has issued an interesting column: a jazz bucket list. Cheekily, it's phlegmatically subtitled "Forty jazz-related things to do before you die (or Keith Jarrett kills you)." Ahem — excuse me. Anyhow, I count that I've completed 13 of Mergner's challenges, including visiting the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers, seeing Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman and visiting the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Queens. But I haven't been to the relatively nearby Woodlawn Cemetary, gone to jazz fantasy camp or been to Vaughan's in New Orleans to hear Kermit Ruffins — at least not in person.
