These guys are going to Cuba.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the big band led by Wynton Marsalis, will travel to Cuba in early October, the organization announced yesterday.
From Oct. 5-9, the JLCO will perform concerts, conduct workshops and welcome Cuban musicians — including piano master Chucho Valdés — in a series of appearances in Havana. (Valdés and his band will appear at New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center later in October, when the JLCO will also present an Afro-Cuban program.)
The group's visit is the acceptance of an invitation from the Cuban Institute of Music, one which is designed to explore the deep connections between American and Cuban musics. The residency is being funded by the Mellon, Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, among others. It is the band's first trip to Cuba.
