He says:

Aww, I'm listening to all kinds of stuff. On my iPod, for instance, I have a recording that the opera singer, Renee Fleming, did. It's not jazz, but it's jazz-influenced. And I actually met with her some time ago — she explained to me that she worked her way through college singing in a jazz band. [The recording] is really nice. "River" is really nice, and there's a Beatles song that she does — "In My Life" — which she does as a slow ballad. It's really gorgeous. And of course, John Coltrane, Live at the Village Vanguard. For me, that's perennial, you know?

Kenny Barron is a pianist, composer and 2010 NEA Jazz Master. He spoke with us in January.
