Frank Carlberg's Tivoli Trio is one of the really great, cohesive piano trios in New York these days. Piano trio records often fall into a textural swamp — you can only listen to so many interesting sonorities before they're no longer interesting. Sooner or later you want some action. Frank's trios are always energetic and this track is no exception. The 2-and-3-note groupings disguise the underlying meter and propel the whole track forward. The piano glides over all the polyrhythms and contributes to the general insanity.
John McNeil is a trumpeter. His latest album, with Bill McHenry, is called Chill Morn He Climb Jenny. He wrote in recently via e-mail.
