McCoy Tyner plays the Nice Jazz Festival in France in 2009.
The singer Jose James (a really good singer, by the way) now knows. He was recently called up to play the Johnny Hartman role in a Tyner-led tribute program of the immortal John Coltrane And Johnny Hartman album. Tyner was the pianist on that album. That album was recorded in 1963. Again, 1963.
The band just played nine nights in Japan, and James wrote about it extensively for his own website (with photographs), from rehearsals to Mt. Fuji. As he says, it was "easily the most powerful musical experience of my life." Not bad. [Jose James: McCoy Tyner]
