As you may know, our frequent NPR Jazz co-conspirator Josh Jackson of WBGO hosts an actual radio program called The Checkout. And for this week, he invited me to appear on it to introduce some of the recordings we made at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Basically, I got to play guest DJ for an hour from our npr.org/montereyjazz archive.

The program aired at 6:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday on WBGO, and you can hear it afterwards online at checkoutjazz.org.

Here's a set list of what got played. The link goes to the full concert recording:

  1. Scott Colley Trio, "Take It And Like It"
  2. Donny McCaslin Group, "Firefly"
  3. Sarah Wilson Quintet, "Go"
  4. Bill Carrothers Trio, "George's Dilemma"
  5. Johnny's Dream Club, "Las Islas Son Malvadas"
  6. John Santos Sextet, "Resistencia"

Also, I don't know if this made the final cut, but if it does: There was a random group of musicians who set up camp in the middle of the food court and jammed for what they told us were Korean TV cameras. There was a guy playing a janky upright piano, a fingerstyle guitarist and a clarinetist of, uh, questionable talent. Ah, California.
