Let's cut to the chase.

I'm going to have an out of building experience and you're coming with me.
Here's the minimum you can expect:

Wednesday March 12, 8pm CT

R.E.M.
Dead Confederate
Johnathan Rice
Papercranes

Thursday March 13th 12:30 CT

Shout Out Louds
Jens Lekman
Adele
Yeasayer
Bon Iver
Vampire Weekend

and that night:

March 13th 8:00 CT

The Whigs
Yo La Tengo
My Morning Jacket

I'll be there with:

Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney and the NPR blog Monitor Mix)
Stephen Thompson (NPR Music's Song of the Day)
Robin Hilton (All Songs Considered producer)
Joel Didriksen (photographer)
and a staff of talented engineers and producers that will make your house/office sound like Austin.

Get a good set of speakers hooked up to your computer; headphones will sound great too. We will podcast much of this on the All Songs Considered Live Concert podcast, So subscribe soon.

Some of NPR's amazing stations will help make all this happen and they'll be broadcasting some of the shows on radio.

If they're not carrying it in your area, you can hear it webcast here at NPR.org.

After 19 years of directing a news show I finally get to go to SXSW. There will be a lively blog, interviews, pictures and of course music.

My out-of-building experience will be webcast.

Shout Out Louds and Jens Lekman in one day.... I think my soul would explode if I got to experience that live. Ahhh. One day I will be lucky enough to go to SXSW. One day.

P.S. Thank youuuu for featuring Dengue Fever on the latest show. They're so mind-blowing and one of my favorite "hometown" groups. Love that diversity in L.A.!

Hey Bob,
That sounds pretty good. I look forward to hearing what My Morning Jacket is up to these days. Too bad you won't make it to see Bryan Scary & The Shredding Tears (the band I mentioned in the Band to Call Your Own post). They will be playing two shows on Mar. 15 according to their myspace page http://www.myspace.com/bryanscary

Yay! You finally get to go. I still think my head would explode if I went to SXSW... I can barely handle CMJ every year. Those are incredible lineups you have. It's good they are packed into two days so that you can scout around the fest for the other days. I'm really looking forward to hearing all about it.

we won't let you down!

Hey Bob,

Listening to the Thom Yorke DJ set right now ; good job on mining the creative process. Have you ever read The Brutality of Fact by David Sylvester? The creative process laid bare. Fascinating interviews with his friend Francis Bacon. Here's a link to the interviews on The Guardian site.

I'm marveling over the SXSW line-up on March 13 - you lucky dog! I've seen many of these bands on individual dates, but all the same day? Can't wait to hear your impressions on the webcast.

I don't know this David Sylvester book. is this the philosopher Francis Bacon?
you're link didn't come through.

I'm sure I'll loose my voice by days end!
all the best

Thank you SO MUCH for streaming this. I'm overseas in Denmark and this will be one of the first times in four years when I couldn't make it down to SXSW. It looks like an awesome lineup. I just saw Jens in Copenhagen and he certainly doesn't disappoint!
Have fun down there!

If were at SXSW how could we come and see Adele? We have a label and our own showcase but would love to see her! Welcome to Austin!

Bad news. we've just found out Adele is not coming to Austin. A shame, but true

14 bands from SXSW, is 14 too many. The only thing bands are rebelling against is change. When rock n roll has become everything it started out opposing, its time to oppose it. Last century music is not what I want. Post-bands is this century music, and it's openly anti-band. Music is scary again! If you want sameness go to Austin and try to tell them apart. Want something new leave it, head north, go to Dallas.

Wow...SXSW has finally Jumped the Shark with the NPR broadcast of REM from Stubb's in Austin, TX. I kinda think that NPR may have also Jumped the Shark by doing this SWSW show.

David Brown needs to go back to Marketplace.

SXSW was originally set up to showcase Austin and area musicians. Now why in the world would REM be a band for SXSW. Well, If you spend over a grand on a platinum badge you better feel that you got your moneys' worth. The best kept secret of SXSW is that you don't need a badge to see lots of great music in Austin during the official SXSW time. If you're a local you can get a music pass for $165 but why bother. There are lots of free, cheap drink, no cover, pass the tip jar please, venues that are rocking and folking and barn dancing all over Austin.

Sure 1750 bands is a lot of bands, but that's only the 'official' count. There are lots of un-official bands and many of the bands that show up do official shows can be seen at free non-official SXSW venues.

You don't need to go to Dallas (why would anyone want to go there unless their grandma lived there - besides everyone has a grandma in Whicita Falls)

SXSW is still a great place for musicians to come to see other musicians- even if you don't get a badge.
