Bands At CMJ, Live From KEXP
by Meg Ruddick
Seattle station KEXP is broadcasting live performances from CMJ during its Morning Show this week. Host John Richards is in New York City inviting bands to perform at the KEXP Cutting Room Studios. Bob has been checking out these sessions for artists he missed, and we've got three of his top picks.
First up is the California band The Union Line. Last year, The Union Line won the title "Best Live Band" from the OC Music Awards. The young group sports a vintage soul sound with sharp guitars and howling, country-tinged vocals. Hear a cut from the live KEXP session, "Goldmine":
Next is Phantogram, a spacey electronic duo from Greenwich, N.Y. With just guitar and keyboard (and laptop), the band creates layered synth soundscapes under beautiful, airy melodies. Listen to "Mouthful of Diamonds" live from KEXP:
Bob's last pick is a new band called Chief. With rich harmonies and a vintage rock swagger, Chief has drawn comparisons to The Band and CSNY. The band was signed to Domino Records this summer, and it is working on its first full-length album. Hear "Mighty Proud," live from the Cutting Room session.
