Asthmatic Kitty Records is giving away another track from the upcoming Sufjan Stevens record, titled The Age of ADZ. The song, "Too Much," is available as a free download from the label's website.
This comes a little more than a week after Asthmatic Kitty gave away the song "I Walked." Both tracks are vastly different from anything Stevens did on earlier albums like Seven Swans or Illinois. He's largely dropped the folky banjo lines and quirky horn arrangements and replaced them with heavy electronics and drum machines, though soaring string parts are still mixed in.
While some diehard fans might not like the new direction, it seems like a wise move for an artist who produced vast amounts of theatrical pop between 2003 and 2006, releasing a well-stocked album each year. I loved his "states" project and was really hoping he'd see it through. But the new sounds you hear on "I Walked" and "Too Much" seem fresher at this point.
