Danger Mouse and James Mercer: 'Insane Lullaby'
A little more than a year after it was first announced, Dark Night of the Soul, the mysterious album from Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and filmmaker David Lynch, is finally getting an official release. It's out July 13, but until then, you can hear the whole thing on NPR Music as part of our First Listen series.
Dark Night Of The Soul features songs written and produced by Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) and Sparklehorse (a.k.a. Mark Linkous), with an all-star cast of guest vocalists, including The Shins' James Mercer, who appears on the track "Insane Lullaby." In the time since it was recorded, Mercer and Burton have continued to work together as Broken Bells, and have performed "Insane Lullaby" at some of the band's live shows as a tribute to Mark Linkous, who took his own life earlier this year.
The version of "Insane Lullaby" that appears on Dark Night of the Soul is a noisy, multilayered track with lots of studio effects and crunchy drum machines. But Burton and Mercer recently recorded this homemade video featuring a stripped-down acoustic version of the track. It's beautiful to hear and see it so bare.
