Son Lux (Ryan Lott) in studio, working on his project to write and record an entire album in February.
So, yesterday was the halfway point. I'm doing well. I have 10 solid song ideas that are quickly telling me what they want to be when they grow up. Over the weekend, I worked on my 10th sketch, which is pretty unusual. Check out how it came together.
Occasionally, I like to sample myself. I take a fragment of music I've written for something else (like dance, for example), re-contextualize it and use it as a starting point for something new. Last week, I had a session with the string trio from yMusic and asked them to bring along their parts for a chamber piece I had written for them more than a year ago. So we tracked it, and this is the section I chose to build from for a new song. Listen to how each part is in a different meter. The cello is in five, the viola is in four and the violin is in three.
First, I added a piano part, implying a couple of simple harmony changes and establishing a tangible pulse (a steady 5/8).
Then I created a rather sinister beat. The way I thought about it was, If the string trio and piano were transformed into a drum kit and drum machine, what would they sound like?
And this is yin and yang together. So fun.
