I put Anna Calvi in my headphones last night. I'd just gotten an advance of her record, which comes out March 1 — and in just a few weeks in Europe — and besides hearing the passion in Calvi's voice, I was also struck by her stark Telecaster guitar. Reference points might be Tom Verlaine of Television for the guitar and a bit of the singing, but there are also elements of blues, opera, Leonard Cohen, Edith Piaf and David Bowie floating around in the mix.
Here are a few videos that give you a good idea why Anna Calvi has captured my attention. What do you think?
