I just drove my son up the East Coast to drop him off for his first year of college. It was a bittersweet moment. I'll miss him and I'm thrilled for his future and his independence. And, when I got back home, I had to find the perfect song to crank up as loudly as possible in my empty nest.
When I was a college student, I lived at home with my parents, so I never realized that kind of freedom. But I do remember listening to a great song by Cream, "I Feel Free," and thinking about how great it was to be out of high school, and to be thought of as an adult. It was the perfect tune. And so, when I got home from dropping my son off, I put it on and cranked it up, and it felt so good.
After a while, I got to thinking: What's the first song a freshman might crank up, once they're free of their parents and full of bliss and maybe even fear? If you're a freshman — or remember that moment clearly — what would be the perfect first song to play?
Parents, how about you? Pick a tune to announce your bittersweet thoughts or newly found time.
Let's see what we come up with and we'll put together a list.
