My favorite musician changes from day to day, or at least week to week. The latest to capture my imagination at the moment is the curiously captivating, Brooklyn-based singer Thomas Patrick Maguire. (Thanks to NPR Music's Daoud Tyler-Ameen for having the presence of mind to IM me a link to this guy's music.) Check out the cover art for Maguire's new compilation album, The Future's Coming So Fast.
He's got sort of a young Chet Baker thing going on. And if I tell you Maguire's music is mostly him and his acoustic guitar, you'd probably think it's a bunch of earnest folk music — but nothing in his sound could be further from that. This song, available for free download from his website, is called "Unemployment Dreams."

It's basically acoustic grunge, which admittedly falls in my aural sweet spot. It's woozy and unpredictable, but also melodic and infectious. We'll have more on Maguire on next week's All Songs Considered. In the meantime, though, let us know what you think.
