The site We Have Lasers!!!!!!!!!! features school portraits with beautiful laser backgrounds. Oh, the memories....
In this week's All Tech Considered, we take a look at the laser, which turns 50 years old. I'd call it The Humble Laser, but there is nothing humble about lasers. Have you seen them? They are shiny and bright and anything but modest.
I count myself among the geeks who are still fascinated by these beautiful beams of light, even as the technology has gotten so cheap that we routinely throw away old CD and DVD players that utilize these wonders of beaming.
A video showing a new use for lasers is enough to send me into fits of joy. A podcast a friend and I record about technology is called, not for nothing, "Age of Lasers."
One of my favorite humor Web sites is called "We Have Lasers!!!!!!!!!!" and features school portraits in which the background is the criss-crossing laser patterns popular in the '80s.
These tributes are small, lightless potatoes next to Laser Fest, a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the laser. Take a look at the nerdy, yet awesome organizations putting on this celebration.
If I have one complaint it's this: just one year? I say we make it a Laser Fest Decade.
