This picture struck an emotional chord. At first I wasn’t sure what it was. The picture is of a man using an iPad in bed. Maybe it was the brilliance of the light emanating from the iPad. It was white and pure, I thought, which must say something about the quality of the display.

But I looked at it some more, and felt a nostalgic pang: This picture marks a fundamental shift in the way we read. It makes a side table and lamp anachronistic, like watching Lucy and Desi sleep in separate twin sized beds. A year ago, this man would have read under the yellow hue of a bulb.

Today, we read in the dark.
