Rather than wait for next week's huge auto show in Detroit, Ford Motor Co. chose the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to unveil an electric version of its Ford Focus sedan.
Ford says the car, which will be released this year, is expected to go up to 100 miles on a single electric charge. The new Focus will have an electronic locator system to help drivers find places where they can recharge their cars while traveling away from home.
That same locator system also will be able to help drivers find their cars in parking lots. Ed Pleet, a product development manager for Ford, says that when Focus drivers come out of the mall, they will be able to ask their smart phones to locate their cars. The system will map out a walking route straight to the vehicle. "I can't tell you how many times I have gone looking for my car," he said.
And if Ford really wants to boost Focus sales, it would develop a killer app: make the device help you find your cart inside Costco.
