The idea that mariachi music and punk rock are related is not as far-fetched as some critics have claimed when reviewing Mariachi El Bronx's new album II. Like punk, lots of mariachi music requires the lead singer to match a certain level of energy. And there is no question about emotion being expressed in both styles. While the similarities stop there, in recent years some musicians have connected the dots between mariachi and others styles brilliantly, such as Mexico's Rana Santacruz and New York-based Pistolera.

Several years ago, LA-based punk rockers The Bronx fell in love with mariachi and decided to embark on this alternate path under the name Mariachi El Bronx. Their second album, II, puts a smile on my face. It is a perfect mix of respect for the mariachi genre with their own raspy, ska-inflected vocal style. Their music is as much a tip of the hat to mariachi master Vicente Fernández as to Sublime.

I've noticed a growing trend of non-Hispanic musicians playing cumbia and salsa, and I'll be honest, the results are mixed. There are those whose sound says that this simply is not music they grew up listening to, and there are those who are so kitschy they border on mockery. And then there are bands like Mariachi El Bronx, who are delightfully fun yet revere the history of this powerful music. Here's "Revolution Girl," a track off their new album:

Mariachi El Bronx Presenta Su Nuevo Álbum II

No estoy de acuerdo con la idea que la música de mariachi y punk rock no tienen nada en común, como han sugerido varios críticos, en reacción a II, el nuevo álbum de Mariachi El Bronx. Igual que la música de punk, el mariachi requiere que el vocalista tenga el mismo nivel de energía y volumen que los instrumentos- sino se ahoga en los sonidos de su banda. Y nadie puede negar que ambos géneros son sumamente emotivos. Aunque no abundan las similitudes, en años recientes varios músicos han podido trazar paralelos entre los dos géneros: entre ellos el mexicano Rana Santacruz y la banda neoyorkina Pistolera.

Hace varios años, un grupo punk de Los Ángeles conocido como The Bronx se enamoró del género mariachi, y así comenzaron un proyecto paralelo a su banda: Mariachi El Bronx. Su segundo álbum, II, me hizo sonreír. Se trata de una perfecta mezcla de respeto hacia el género mariachi y su propio estilo ska-punk. La música de Mariachi El Bronx le hace homenaje tanto a al maestro Vicente Fernández como a la banda Sublime.

He notado una moda de bandas no-latinas tocando cumbia y salsa, y les soy sincera, los resultados varían. Hay bandas cuyo sonido me indica que esta simplemente no es la música que escucharon desde niños, y hay otras agrupaciones que producen un sonido tan kitsch que casi se podría considerar una burla. Y luego hay bandas como Mariachi El Bronx: pura diversión, sin dejar de mostrar respeto por un gran estilo musical. Acá les paso la canción "Revolution Girl," de su nuevo álbum:

Found Mariachi is an occasional series in which we shout out to mariachi found in unexpected musical places.

My first post featured Lady Gaga.

Well, La Gaga is making news with mariachi fans again after announcing she will have a cut on an upcoming album recorded with a mariachi band and she will be singing it in Spanish.

And it's not just any song.

During a news conference while on tour in Mexico, she described it as a song critical of what she calls "unjust" laws in Arizona that target Mexican immigrants.

The song, "Americano," is getting a preview during the singer's current Monster Ball tour. Sorry, no mariachi here. It's just the Lady, her piano and a very enthusiastic Mexican audience.

Lady Gaga Vuelve A Hacer Mariachi

"Mariachi Inesperado" es una serie ocasional en la cual compartimos música mariachi que encontramos en los lugares mas sorprendentes.

Comenzamos la serie con un artículo sobre Lady Gaga cantando mariachi.

Al parecer a Gaga le gusta mucho el Mariachi ya que acaba de anunciar que en su próximo álbum tendrá una canción grabada con una banda mariachi, y estará cantando en español.

Recientemente Gaga estuvo en México, y durante una conferencia de prensa que dio allí, habló sobre su nueva canción, la cual critica a las leyes "injustas" de Arizona contra la inmigración.

La canción se llama "Americano", y es parte del repertorio de Gaga durante su gira "Monster Ball." Aquí se la paso—aunque les advierto que en la versión en vivo no usa mariachi. Tan solo es ella, su piano, y una muy energética audiencia mexicana.

Y Ahora Les Presentamos: Mariachi Inesperado

Atención: A partir de hoy comienza una serie ocasional llamada "Mariachi Inesperado", en la cual compartiremos canciones conocidas que inesperadamente son hechas en versión mariachi.

Empezamos nuestra serie con Lady Gaga. Si, oyeron bien- Lady Gaga.

Y por si eso no les basta, esta semana hablamos sobre el grupo de rap koreano llamado Clover, que en su nueva canción "La Vida Loca" usa el estilo mariachi.

Y no se olviden que en Febrero les contamos sobre Metalachi, una banda mariachi heavy metal de Los Ángeles.
