Maneja Beto is a band based in Austin, Texas; it's as comfortable rocking out a cumbia as it is wailing on a synth-driven rocker. The group really lives the independent life by releasing albums itself, and it's just released a new single that's worth checking out.

"El Abrigo" is a major step forward for this quintet. The layered musical textures on this track are anchored by a chord progression on a synth organ, which is offset by guitar parts that echo and counterbalance the subtle intensity of the march-like groove. Watch the video for "El Abrigo" below.

Maneja Beto's members are all veterans of various traditional Mexican music groups, but it's obvious in "El Abrigo" that their cultural references are found in other musical trailblazers who sing in English and Spanish.

I especially like the thunderous heavy-metal drumming that closes the final seconds of the track. A musical wink of the eye to John Bonham and Led Zeppelin?

Either way, it's a prefect ending and a reminder that any new music from Maneja Beto is worth waiting for.
