The Colombian band Aterciopelados shows its love of Mexican music on a new compilation.

The bicentennial of Mexico's independence from Spain is upon us this week. News from within the country and in the foreign press is that the mood is widely subdued due to the violence plaguing the country.
When NPR's Morning Edition asked me to report on a compilation album called Bimexicano: Clasicos Hecho Rock, it struck me that the two seemingly unrelated items did in fact have something to do with one another. It struck me that Mexico's rich legacy of music could in fact be an aid in helping Mexicans deal with life during this difficult time.
Bimexicano: Clasicos Hecho Rock features artists from throughout Latin America and reflects the influence Mexican music has had throughout the region. The approaches to the music are distinct, but always reverential. I picked three that are my favorites.

Nueva Música Inspirada Por El Bicentenario Mexicano
