Bye, Bye Turd Blossom, While You Were Out, The Most

"Morning Meeting" is a recap of our daily editorial meeting. These are some of the stories you will hear today.
Hi, I'm Lauren Spohrer and it's a beautiful day in Bryant Park. We've had plenty of coffee and are working hard on today's show. The big news today, obviously, is the resignation of the president's deputy chief of staff, Karl Rove. We're coming at the story with a few questions you haven't heard anywhere else. After the jump, a quick recap of our morning meeting and what you can expect from the show later today.
(Editor's Note: Lauren is a brilliant, talented producer who is helping us out until she starts her master's program at Columbia. That's right, a master's from Columbia. We hope you enjoy the benefits of Lauren's enormous brain. --Matt Martinez)
KARL ROVE: In an interview with WSJ editorial page editor, Paul Gigot, Rove announced that his last day will be August 31st. We'll talk about the legacy of his 14 years with President Bush and some of his political predictions. Not surprisingly, Rove's personal plans involve spending more time with his family. Luke takes a look at the overused sentiment and how unlikely it is Rove will spend the coming years in couples yoga.
WHILE YOU WERE OUT (POSSIBLY DRINKING): Here's what you missed while you slept all weekend. Saturday, police officers in New York used radiological sensors to scan cars, trucks and city buses for evidence of a dirty bomb attack, but nothing suspicious was found. The heightened security measures were taken after an Israeli-based Web site suggested al Qaeda may attack New York. Elsewhere on Saturday, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the Republican presidential straw poll in Ames, Iowa. Ex-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee came in second. Former Wisconsin Guv Tommy G. Thompson placed 6th, and then dropped out of the race. On Sunday, more than 17,000 passengers were stuck at LAX after a U.S. Customs computer crashed. And thanks for playing, Merv Griffin! The "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" creator died Sunday of prostate cancer. He was 82.
WHO'S YOUR VILLAIN NOW, DOG? We ask the liberal blogosphere what they'll do without their whipping boy, M.C. Rove.
THE MOST: The obvious first stop on a media website is the list of most emailed stories. Today we'll review a few and ask ourselves who would email this story to a friend? In the meantime, can you identify this barfy quote from a most emailed story: "You ask me for intimacy...the same way you ask if I'd like croutons on my salad."
FACTORY RECORDS FOUNDER DIES AT 57: Tony Wilson launched the careers of Joy Division, New Order, the Happy Mondays, The Smiths, Stone Roses and Oasis. He passed away Friday night after battling kidney cancer. We'll remember him on the podcast.
