The Trials of Larry Craig, the Anniversary of Katrina, the Next Frontier, and a Dog That's Richer Than You

Republican Senator Larry Craig insists he's not keeping any secrets.

-- Larry, Larry, Larry. Where to begin? We'll break down the news of Republican Senator Larry Craig's illicit behavior in a Minneapolis airport bathroom, and we'll talk to Mike Rogers from BlogActive, a site that outs politicians that it claims are gay. We're not sure we agree with Mike's mission, but it certainly makes for a lively discussion. And for extensive coverage of the Larry Craig scandal, check out the Idaho Statesman's page. (Of course, Craig says the Statesman is conducting a "witch hunt," but we'll let you decide for yourself.)

-- Today is the two year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. We'll talk with a longtime resident of the city who stayed there throughout the storm and its aftermath, New Orleans Times-Picayune art critic and reporter Doug McCash.

-- Luke has to get something out of his system, in a little segment we call "Private Time with Luke."

Virgin Galactic employees sit in a prototype of a spacecraft to be used for space tourism. Virgin will charge $200,000 for four minutes in zero gravity.

-- Virgin Galactic, the Richard Branson enterprise that aims to be the first space tourism outfit, had some bad news recently. An accident at a testing facility killed three workers. We wanted to learn more about what happened, and what's happening with space tourism in general. If you aren't as curious, just check out these videos. You'll come around.

-- There's a movement afoot among some American parents and doctors to skip diapers altogether and go straight to potty training. We'll ask a pediatrician: What up with this?

-- The Ramble: Leona Helmsley's will leaves $12 million for her dog, an apparently impossiple brat of a pup named Trouble. After Helmsley died I tried very hard to give her the benefit of the doubt. So much for that...A French suburb has been spraying homeless people with a foul-smelling spray in order to get them to go away. French people spraying homelss people to make them smell bad? Isn't this a stereotype of a stereotype?

All that and more on today's show. Check it out.

No more podcasts? Too bad...I was enjoying listening in my car on the way back and forth to work.

Actually Doug, the podcast link will be posted shortly. Sometimes it takes a little longer.

Luke, is it me, or did I hear you say "airporn bathroom" rather than "airport bathroom?" Freudian slip? :-)

The Larry Craig-related stuff was particularly interesting. That was a really good discussion with Mike Rogers. I love it when the questions and comments in my head come out of my speakers in Luke or Alison's voice.

Paraphrasing the law as read by Alison, if someone does something (like foot-tapping) "knowing it will anger, alarm, or disturb others", then it's disorderly conduct. Is it just me or is this an insanely broad definition of disorderly conduct? Given the number of straight men who would be "disturbed" by any sort of advances from another guy (even respectful, non-bathroom related ones), it almost seems like if you're gay Minnesota, best not mention it if you wanna stay out of jail.

Arson at Burning Man - that's just funny. I'm sure lots of intoxicated naked people were upset about it and that sucks. And I know I'm stereotyping and that's bad. But the problem is that somebody burned the Burning Man. There's just no way that isn't a bit amusing.

Miss the musical view. What is the music title (the same as LA Theater Works) of the song

Sent by Charles | 7:15 PM ET | 08-29-2007

I like the music right after the Mike Rogers interview.

Elimination communication... When it comes to excretion on cue, are we talking about human babies or Pavlov's dog? This also reminds me of what that automated toilet paper company that was on the BPP on August 8th which studies "events."

Speaking of bathrooms -- with senators and babes (young children, that is) -- I had an interesting urinal experience today. I was at The Heritage Foundation today, and its 7th floor men's bathroom is interesting. One of the stalls and urinals are next to large windows that don't have any covering. Even though you're on the 7th floor, it is still weird using the facilities... Someone could still peep on you!

Pheww....I guess I never noticed that the podcast went up later than the stream. I'm glad you're still doing it.

I just can't wait for this show to hit the airwaves. I've been listening to every podcast and it really makes my 1 hour commute fly by.

The French suburb of 'Argenteuil' is pronounced "ar-zhen'-toy" (aprox.)

I wished that the coverage of the two year anniversary of Katrina in New Orleans described the disaster more like Harry Shearer has done over the course of the last two years: a failure of a federal levy system in a weaker storm at landfall than it was designed for rather than a huge natural disaster from a killer storm of immense proportions that Alison described it as.
