Open Thread: Sound Off on the BPP, 10.02.07

Gentle reader writes to say:

"A quick request: Could you drop a daily stub of a blog for discussion of the day's show?"

Yes, we could. And here it is, the first open thread for you to take today's edition of The Bryant Park Project to town, to task, to pieces.

I'll start: Joe Palca's report on the E. coli panic being perhaps overblown made me want to head for a vegan dosa cart.

Anybody else want to sound off?

Thanks, Laura.

- There is something a little odd in referring to Afghanistan as 'You know, the other war?' I mean, that's how I think of it with enough irony that you can cut it with a knife. But when I hear it on the radio? Sounds badly snarky. Expect a Senate condemnation bill any day.

-Luke, you were in Minneapolis this weekend? Please tell me you were trying to get the BPP on MPR. Not that you should have a life or anything...

-Good longer segment on Blackwater. A bit of depth and background, along with how much these guys are getting paid. I couldn't help thinking, "I wonder how they'd approach this sort of explanatory interview if they were told to explain the various frenemies network of celebutantes these days."

- What is the difference between Brit-Brit news and Paris news? There's something, but I can't figure it out for the life of me.

- Radiohead. They could never have done what they're doing if they were the Detholz...but this really is tremendous. I wish them the best of luck and a great many pounds.

BTW, from which radio stations (via stream) I can catch your show live. I listen to the podcast but sometimes I'm home in the mornings (in US time, it's afternoon here in Finland) and like to listen your show, u know...

I'll second the request for what radio stations are carrying BPP. PublicRadioFan.com has a page all setup and ready for you, at http://www.publicradiofan.com/cgibin/program.pl?programid=5095 just waiting to fill in with stations. Right now they link to the podcast.

Also, are you going to post music interlude info like other programs do? The link is there on the rundown pages, but they don't work. I paused the podcast earlier and went to my browser to see what music was playing, but couldn't find out. Rats!

Love the program, good luck to all. I'm a Manhattanite, maybe I'll see you some lunchtime around Bryant Park. :)

Great shows so far, guys! The casual format is really working well so far.

The story about Susan Stanton was really great. It's good to hear a major news outlet come to an issue like gender identity so well. I think we're so used to the transgender issue being sensationalized in the news that it's always refreshing to hear it come from a sensitive source.

I also really enjoyed todays music segment. The only thing I miss is the sweet opening from the pilot podcasts. I listen to the show via podcast, so I don't know if it's just being cut out of the podcast or if it's completely gone. I say bring it back!

I especially like the E coli segment. I have worked in the food industry for a long time and one of the first things we are trained to do is to be very cautious about cooking meat.

- I loved the Ben Harper take on Purple Rain. I wonder if Prince will have the same reaction to it that he did when Sinead O'Connner covered "Nothing Compares 2 U".

I too always enjoyed the Alison/Luke banter at the very top of the show on all the online pilots. It was loose, unscripted and real in exactly the way that most such banter isn't. I'm with Benjamin, it it's not gone for good, bring it back!

MAKE ME CARE segment. Uh, no. Dude wants to make me care about anything, he GOTS to stop talking history and start talking context. The idea is terrific, and Alison/Luke need to be able to harsh EVERYONE who tries their MMC cred vibe until someone really nails it right.

Hi My name is Goldilocks! The other day I came upon this house in the woods and there were three beds inside. The 1st one was Howard Stern's bed. It was too dirty. I couldn't sleep on that. The 2nd was NPR. It was all soft and mushy like for old people? And then I found one that was just right and it was called the Bryant Park Project and that's where I like to lay down everyday for an hour. Thanks BBP!
