Super-Secret Second Hour: BPP Goes Big

Son and Daughters' Gilt Complex

Don't know what you were doing between 8 and 9 a.m. Eastern, but here at the Bryant Park Project we were making radio. After the bump, the rundown of stories. My personal picks are the Cancer Gene story and the Sons and Daughters studio visit. Go, Glasgow, go.

Bomb Blasts Mar Bhutto's Return

Pakistan's president calls yesterday's suicide bombing in Karachi a "conspiracy against democracy." The blast happened during the homecoming celebration for ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto and killed as many as 136 people. Bhutto herself was not hurt.

Southeast Faces Dire Drought

States across the Southeast are in the most extreme category of drought. In North Carolina and Alabama, the drought is on course to be the worst since reporting began in the late 1800's. Ryan Boyles, the North Carolina State climatologist, explains what this means for residents and farmers, and what the implications are for the future.

The Cancer Gene

If you could find out whether you had a gene that could cause a dangerous, even lethal disease, would you do it? One company is now offering women the chance to test themselves for a gene that may predispose them for breast or uterine cancer, BRCA 1 and 2. It's the first test of its kind that's being marketed to the general public. We hear from Connie Elliott, a Salt Lake City real estate broker who took the test and found out she had the cancer-linked gene. Dr. Art Caplan, a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania, explores the ramifications of offering people this test.

Guess Who's a 'Values Voter'?

Yesterday we talked to people attending the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., which is sponsored by the conservative group Family Research Council. Host Alison Stewart asked about people who hold different beliefs, and whether they would say, "Hey, we have values, too!" We read choice responses from readers on our blog.

Make Me Care: Digital TV

Americans' analog TV sets will stop working on February 17, 2009, when analog broadcasting officially ends and is replaced by digital TV. Many people's response, so far, anyway, has been: Yawn! This week we had a sign that retailers, however, are taking heed: Best Buy will no longer stock analog TVs. Shermaze Ingraham from the National Association of Broadcasters tries to make us care.

Listen Here: Sons and Daughters

It's CMJ Music Marathon -- week in New York, and we bring you one of the bands that's come to town, Sons and Daughters, from Glasgow, Scotland. They give us a dose of their indie rock with elements of rockabilly, punk, and traditional Scottish stuff thrown in.

Really enjoyed this second hour.

I hope you are seriously considering adopting the extended format. From the breast cancer story, to the digital TV lowdown, to the amazingly well produced live performance, it was as good if not better than the first hour. The band interview was surprisingly interesting.

Also, the Timbaland backing track at the end was a nice time-filling touch. Unfortunately, if it had lasted any longer this listener might have been tempted to unleash his god-awful Justin Timberlake impression upon the world.

With any luck next time you can convince the band to just keep on playing.
