New Orleans: Murder in the Old Motel
From the New Orleans Times-Picayune:
Residents said they had heard a fight about an alleged infidelity and then had seen a man leave an upstairs room carrying a bloody brown knife with a long silver blade.
Police were called to the Cinema Motel, on the fairly miserable Airline Drive, where many of the rooms are still wrecked from Hurricane Katrina floodwater.
You have to pity New Orleans for being such a hard place to live, and then you have to love its newspaper's relentless chronicling of the toll.
The door was cracked open, giving them a view of two people lying motionless on the bed, one atop the other, with a towel draped over their faces, [Sheriff Newell Normand] said.
Deputies believed that the two were "either unconscious or had passed," he said. But when they entered the room, a man, identified as Terry Robinson, 51, jumped up holding a knife. He stabbed at the woman's body on the bed and then attempted to slash a deputy.
Officers shot the man, who survived and was taken to the hospital. The woman, sadly, didn't make it.
