One Wild and Crazy Guy and a Morning Show

Steve Martin was in the office today taping something non-BPP related, which set our newsroom a twitter. We convinced him to pose for a photo with us:

The whole encounter set off a conversation about what our favorite Martin moments were. Mine's from 1979's The Jerk, where Martin as the almost unflappable Navin R. Johnson, is leaving his wife Marie, and decides to forsake all his earthly belongings...almost:

What are your favorite Steve Martin bits?

I don't need one other thing...just Steve Martin...Carl Reiner...and this remote control. And that's it! For sure!

I listened to my sister's old copy of a Wild and Crazy Guy about 5 or so years ago (this was before the Great Vinyl Purge of 2005 in the Tobey household). The "Cat Handcuffs" bit, though brief, was one of the funniest, most bizarre things I'd ever heard.

I laugh just thinking about it.

While I loved his recent (non-comedic) performance in Shopgirl and view his SNL hosting gigs as must-see TV, I think one of the best Steve Martin performances I have yet seen was in the 1986 film version of "Little Shop of Horrors" where he played a uproarious, sadistic . . . well . . . um, you just have to see it for yourself.

A warning though: This video is not for the squeamish. Or for those with odontophobia . . .

I watched the Jerk recently, and the 'Cat Juggling' scene almost made me pass out laughing.

Behind the smiles: Mike Pesca took the pic, and he made us all say "Uumellmahaye." Look it up.

Hint: "Into the mud, scum queen!"
