Luke Burbank Counts the Hours

description

Almost done.

The trainers are over by the bench now, working on Luke Burbank, getting the Bryant Park Project host ready for his last two hours on the show. Mr. Burbank sends the above photo essay of one image, and the following caption:

This is the look on my face at 3:45am this morning...realizing that this my last day of getting up at 3:45am.

Wow, Luke, it's been fun. Good luck. Have a safe trip back to Seattle.

If nothing else, Luke will always have a place in my heart for this exchange from one of last week's shows, after a story about how commercial vitamins might have steroids and other nasty things in them:

LUKE: That's why when I'm at the mall, I always walk right past the GNC and go directly to Cinnabon.

RACHEL: At least at Cinnabon, you know what you're getting.

LUKE: Yep. Horse semen.

With Luke gone, who's gonna make horse semen jokes at 7:45 a.m.? Okay, Imus maybe, but I mean someone I'd actually want to listen to.

Oh, Luke, how can you leave us? Well, leaving to be closer to your daughter just endears you to me even more. I started listening to the BPP because I saw your name attached to it. I loved you on Wait Wait, and I had enjoyed all your NPR reports (particularly because you pronounced "Boise" correctly). You're proof that a teenage dad can actually turn out to be responsible (you realize you announced your age and your daughter's, right? Wasn't hard to do the math).
I must have missed your announcement about your next move. Hopefully the BPP will let us know where we can still listen to you? Good luck, and welcome back to the Pacific Northwest!

Luke, safe travels and happy holidays! You'll be missed.

Sent by Eli | 1:44 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Ah yes, horse semen. Those were the days. I hope Luke never regretted anything he said on the show, but I sure have enjoyed listening to him say things that other people would have regretted saying.

My heartache at Luke's departure is tempered, only very slightly, by the fact that you guys are now posting your "musical interludes". Awesome.

Love the show, sorry to see you leave, Luke. Good luck going back to Seattle...

Sent by Rachel | 2:56 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Sorry to see you go...one of the most refreshing voices on NPR (I can't really imagine Karl Cassel saying horse semen). You (and Allison and the rest of the gang) made NPR something fun to listen to. Please let us know where we can hear you in Seattle.

Luke, I've loved the fact that somebody my age is hosting an NPR news show. I'll miss your sense of humor and hope that the future brings you all the best.

Sent by Erin | 4:18 PM ET | 12-14-2007

I've only recently become addicted to the BPP through iTunes podcasts - and I'm so sad you're leaving! I'm glad to know you'll be in my town of Seattle though, maybe i'll hear you on the airwaves there. Traveling mercies!

Sent by Deanne | 4:29 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Luke--- from someone who has spent the last four years trying unsuccessfully to move back to my hometown, I am both jealous of you and devestated at the thought of the BPP without you. Your taste in music and movies is impeccable--- I'll miss you recaping Eliot Smith's performance at the Oscars again-- and again--- and again. And your unreferenced Simpson quotes. I, for one, welcome our new CoHost overlords.
Peace out!

Like others said, Luke, your sense of humor kills me. I'm going to miss listening to your dry wit every morning.

It's a real loss to not have you around anymore. I'll google your name from time to time to see if I can pick you up in future broadcasts somewhere.

Take care, man.

Sent by chris | 4:50 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Best of luck to you, Luke, and best of luck to the rest of the BPP for soldiering on without you!

Sent by Jesse | 4:59 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Luke's goodbye with Journey playing under him made me want to run to the airport and wait with him for his plane. Listening on the internet the single most important gem of advice he has picked up in his life to always make a point to always...was cut off! What did I miss?

Sent by Emily | 5:30 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Emily: that was how it ended on the radio too. It was a joke. A slightly stale joke, given that the reference is to the Sopranos finale last summer, but a joke nonetheless.

Sent by Stewart | 6:04 PM ET | 12-14-2007

I heart Luke Burbank. You'll be missed.

Sent by Robin | 6:19 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Good luck with everything Luke. BPP was lucky to have you.

Oh, I'm glad I didn't miss what you said in the end on the internet. I was like WTF?!
That was cool though.
Thanks for making NPR fun.

Sent by Charlie | 6:49 PM ET | 12-14-2007

horse semen was great and so was today's "muskrat love."

farewell, funny-man. hope your replacement is just as goofily informative (informatively goofy?).

Sent by kim | 7:20 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Use the force, Luke. (Am I really the only one who thought of that?!)

Sent by Steve Thompson | 8:42 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Unfortunately KQED doesn't (yet!) carry BPP in San Francisco, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the last two months of BPP podcasts, especially everything you did to make it interesting, funny, thoughtful, and occasionally moving or irreverent. Best of luck in future endeavors, Luke. As a best-coaster, we're glad to have you back.

Sent by Rob | 8:59 PM ET | 12-14-2007

Here's hoping NPR can find a worthy successor to Luke. Thanks for enlivening NPR's mornings. You guys are fresh, young, hip, and exciting. Love it.

Its so weird not seeing Luke's picture in the "NPR Voices" section of the page...

Sent by Charlie | 2:41 AM ET | 12-15-2007

It's so sad that you're leaving, but I wish you best of luck in your future endeavors!

Oh, and thanks for making me laugh while listening to an NPR show! Fancy that!

Sent by Luke | 12:58 PM ET | 12-15-2007

Luke's mid sentence ending made sense, regrettably. In fact his departure was mid-sentence. Things were just getting started and he had all these entertaining things to say and...

Sent by ella | 2:16 AM ET | 12-16-2007

Luke, I am devastated... I reserve 150 minutes each day to an activity that's conducive to shutting everyone else out so I can tune into you and Alison and the rest of the BPP gang. Not only have I been getting in damn good shape (the treadmill seems to be the best place for my daily BPP podcast), I've also gotten a helluva lot smarter over the past few months listening to you. I think my boyfriend has become insanely jealous of because I'm constantly talking about you. I think he may actually be happy you're heading back to Seattle. On the contrary, I am most certainly not! Alas.

Best of luck, Luke!

Thanks so much you guys. Those messages are really nice. I sort of hoped no one caught the Horse Semen thing, but apparently you all did.
I've got a new radio thingy starting up real soon. If you're outside of Seattle you can hear it online and thru iTunes. It'll be on at a different hour than The BPP so you can listen to both productions. How awesome!

I'll keep you all posted.

your pal,

Luke
