Graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang is the author of American Born Chinese, the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award. On the show this week, and in the slideshow above, he talks about growing up inside and out of the culture.

What strikes me as I listen and view this article is the important role that art played in the acculturization of the author. Rather than marginalize or under-fund the arts in our schools, we need to make them more available to both English-language learners and the "American-born" to bring greater understanding of ourselves and each other.
