Video: The Whigs Live at the BPP

A year ago, Rolling Stone called the the Whigs "the best unsigned band in America." With the combination of ink like that and their trademark ear-blistering live shows, it wasn't long before Dave Matthew's ATO Records took notice and signed the Athens, Georgia, band to a multi-album deal. Their second record, Mission Control, has drawn gleeful comparisons to both Nirvana and Superchunk by critics and fans alike.

I swear to God, NPR needs to get some correspondents/music critics/journalists who are not constantly falling all over themselves to lavish praise on these pathetic indie artists who really have nothing to say. Look at all those critics on NPR whose "best of 2007" contains the new Arcade Fire CD. All of them! There's about as much musical diversity in those lists as ethnic diversity at a country club.

Where's the love for a band like Protest the Hero? Their latest CD is basically a concept album of how world culture turned from Goddess worship to female subjugation. Surely that's more interesting than yet another band that appeals to affluent thirty-somethings looking to hold onto the memories of their "wilder" days.

Greg,

Check out Musicheads podcasts. You'll get all the concept album stuff and more that you can partially digest.
