A New Sound for the BPP. You Like or No?

Our producers tried something new today for the opening block of the show. Basically they created a tapestry of cool sounds for a Super Tuesday report, and then folded the opening newscast right in.

I'm interested to hear how you like it.

I have a problem with all the "cool" sound cluttering the background throughout the show. It is awkwardly done, and often sounds like a scratched CD disc. It's really annoying to try to hear the host through this quasi-disco audio mess! Really uncool!

When music is woven combining voice with thought and time (ala This American Life), the result can be quite powerful.

So, in this case, using music to introduce: good. fun. modern.

But using the music on a loop with the voice over: distracting. too commercial radio sounding.

You have good content. No need to clutter it up.

Your description made it sound like it was like that thing that opens the first hour of Weekend Edition Sunday, the "voices from this week's news," which I despise with a fiery passion. But actually, I liked the way it combined the day's Big Story and the usual newscast. I wouldn't want it every day, but on days like this where there's clearly a major story that both segments would focus on, it makes sense.

And personally, I've always really liked the music beds under certain segments, which I don't find distracting or too much like commercial radio. So, overall, thumbs up.

Sorry for the thread-jack. What was the song played under the end credits on today's show?

Thanks,

Just wanted to say that here in NM there were some voting problems with ballots running out, 3 hour plus lines, and lines waiting in sub-freezing weather.

@Paul ... Director Jacob Ganz says It's "Finer Feelings" by Spoon. From the record Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.
