You Can Name Jill Sobule's Band!

Help, please: Jill Sobule and the (Fill in the Blank)

BPP musical editorialist Jill Sobule is working on a new record. She also is putting together a new band. Funny thing, the witty wordsmith is at a loss for a name for her new group.

Please help Jill -- she's our friend. What should she name her band?

"Jill and the Incredible Fantastics."

At least that is what I would call a group that consistently puts out music that is both over the top, irresistible, and 100% catchy.

I began listening to the BPP in Nov. and found it a refreshing change. Unfortunately I have found it to become increasingly inane. What started as lighthearted chat to balance with solid reporting has become overwhelming. The value of the dialogue between the host and the sports commentator is not enhanced by comment such as ???honey??? and other endearing comments. Many professional couples have worked together both in the media and the larger world without leaving the listener wondering if we are eavesdropping, it adds nothing to the show. The background music during some of the reports at the right volume level was innovative but as it is being overused it has begun to take away from the clarity of the communication. At times it appears there is lack of seriousness, inappropriate comments, and out right ignorance, which was best displayed by a comment as to JFK juniors assassination.

I have not given up on the show because it showed so much promise; hence will alternate with a regional program for a few weeks to she how the show evolves. I notice a significant change to the worse when the male co-host left the show. Possibly if you reestablish having a permanent 2 person team it might help with the balance.

" Unfortunately I have found it to become increasingly inane."

I strongly disagree. I have no doubt that the staff of the BPP is perfectly capable of putting out a clone of Morning Edition, but who needs another one? I have listened to the BPP from the first podcast and if anything it's just hitting its stride. I love the offbeat stories, the hosts and producers indulging their passions, and their moxie to continually try new things. Some experiments like The Rundown are excellent. Others like Luke's infamous Sigur R??s interview and Ilya dropping the fbomb on mic... not so much so. The interplay between Allison and Bill is priceless. I hate sports, but my ears always perk up when Bill comes on. Time will tell if the BPP format is successful, but I certainly hope it will be.

Now if Laura can use some of her copious spare time (cough) to set up a forum where the loyal and not-so-loyal listeners could blather about things like this the BPP would be perfect.

I'm guessing Greg and Peter don't have dates for tonight.

Sent by Tony Camas | 12:53 PM ET | 02-14-2008

You're too harsh peter. The BPP folks still "got it." In my opinion they are as good as they have ever been... maybe better.

Try to name one other show on radio (besides Wait Wait) where the hosts can rebound from mistakes with the same flare and panache as our beloved BPP hosts can. They bring a wit and joy to the news that perfectly complements my NYT, Washington Post, and PBS News Hour diet. It is a tasty and nutritious morning treat intended to supplement a healthy news diet. It's sorta like "Fresh Air" but funner.

And I think that Rachel Martin would make an excellent co-host for Alison, just for the record. We live in an era where producers should not feel obliged to have a male host complement a female host. Let quality win out, I say!

Sent by Will G | 12:56 PM ET | 02-14-2008

No, I don't have a date, my fiance?? would kill me.

As much as I appreciate the notion that my immunity to the sub-Lisa-Loeb warblings of a woman whose novelty songwriting capacity peaked with "I Kissed a Girl" makes me some sort of hapless loser, I feel compelled to conjecture that your lowered musical standards probably don't equate to a lot of "action", "dude".

Sent by Greg | 2:48 PM ET | 02-14-2008

I love both Alison and Rachel and think they make a great on-air team, but there's one problem. My ears (or at least the ones I possess at seven in the morning) have difficulty telling their voices apart. So I get confused, and I'm already confused enough.

So here's my suggestion: Could one of you two, like, talk in a funny voice, or with a funny accent or something? That way, we'd know who is who, plus it would further cement BPP's growing reputation for irreverence. And, as a bonus, snide blog comments would go through the roof.

Either that, or keep Bill Wolff around for every segment, and we'll be able to tell who's who because Alison will be the one who keeps calling him "honey."

Greg, dude: I was not attacking you or date-worthiness, merely suggesting a possible reason for what seemed like an unduly grumpy attitude. Your musical taste is your business; I happen to think in this particular case you're misinformed, but that's what makes this the big, beautiful world it is, right? Have a nice evening with your Valentine, and whatever music makes you happy.

And, you know, sorry that peter j isn't enjoying the show so much. For what it's worth, I'm finding the BPP increasingly compelling. Perhaps because I work in a setting that has high standards even while "(a)t times it appears there is lack of seriousness, inappropriate comments, and out right ignorance," what bugs peter j is endearing and inviting to me.

Nope, nothing better to do, I'm at work, but what about you? Almost 6:00 PM on Valentine's Day and you're responding to vitriol directed at you by a guy 500 miles away?

Come on.

Also, it's cool that you stole my girlfriend way back in 1995. If you did anything more than kiss her, that's statutory, lady.

Sent by Greg | 9:15 AM ET | 02-15-2008

hahaha Jill, you homewrecker, I love it!!! I am a fan of the previous suggestions of Jill and the insolubles. Or Jill and the Elubos.

ps if you look up sobule in urbandictionary, you are used as an example of the slanf word Bass

2. bass

Another term equivalant to cool, tight, sweet, awesome, etc etc. Almost exclusively used as an adjective. Originated within garage bands from Ohio and spread from there.

It is pronounced like the instrument, not the fish. Pronouncing it in the latter sense is a source of ridicule.

1. That new song by Jill Sobule is pretty bass.
