Musical Columnist Jill Sobule Live at the BPP

These days, independent artists can make some serious cash by spilling the beans on their liaisons with the politically powerful.

Well, not BPP musical columnist Jill Sobule.

These don't do a whole lot for me. Jill Sobule? Why? She's like 50. She had one hit in 1995. That was 13 years ago. She puts a damper on the BPP's style.

This does a whole lot for me. Jill Sobule? She's brilliant. Live, acoustic, recording, full-band and now on the BPP. She's politically savvy and so are her hooks. I'm so glad she broke away from the Billboard "hits" and major record labels and image. These are traits of the past. Long live independent music/thinkers.

Figures the slam would come from "anonymous". Anonymous IIRC derives from the Latin phrase meaning useless coward*.

* Actually, the word anonymous derives from the Greek anonymos meaning "without a name." I was just being snarky.

Are you kidding? That's so empty-minded to say... She's amazing, and in my opinion - ageless. Her words are so influential and adorable! Who else could have those two adjectives in the same sentence? I wish she had made it bigger than she did.. but she's still a major favorite of mine & it's people like YOU who put a damper on the BPP's style; or the entire internet for that matter. If you have nothing nice to say, seriously, keep it to yourself.

Yes, long live independent thinkers, who have concocted a new business model. They can spend all of the money they made from their touring and their record contracts, and then, after their career has been quietly smoldering and almost ready to fade away gracefully, they can tap into their gullible fanbase to raise way more money than is actually needed to produce an album. Jill, you need to be more like other has-been F-list celebrities and be a commentator on VH1 shows, not bilk your fans for all they're worth.

I am so excited by this artist, and then got so sad to read the first posting by annon.
Perhaps you meant to go to a nasty gossip site than an NPR sight, we prefer to support artists, not put them down.

I think she sounded great.

I always like when Jill is on. Her song about Condoleezza reminded me of Ze Frank's excellent song with a similar theme: http://www.zefrank.com/condi/

Jill Sobule is terrific. She's continued to make great songs since all the attention heaped upon her based on "I Kissed A Girl." Check out "Underdog Victorious" or "Bitter" on Itunes.

When choosing a musical editorialist one could go with experience, political savvy, wit and a charming playfulness. Or one could go for someone really young and popular, since I think we all want to hear Hannah Montana share her views on lead tainted toys. (Well, that is one way to get fans, chemically lower their IQs until you seem brilliant.)

As for me, give me Jill's playful broadsides against the powers that be. I look forward to each like a birthday gift from a cool friend. A funny friend who can still fit into HER Catholic school outfit.

I like this; I like her. The idea that she's "too old." What an ***hole! Anyway, when it comes to women, 50 is the new 13.
Keep it up NPR; keep it up Jill. (Keep it up isn't sexist, is it?)

A word to our old "pal" Greg:

It's one thing to profess a lack of interest or even a dislike for a performer or her music, as you did last time we were discussing Jill here. That's your opinion, and you are entitled to it.

But to suggest that Jill is "bilking" her "gullible fanbase" for "all they're worth" and raising "way more money than is actually needed to produce an album" is really stepping over the line. Saying this reflects a profound ignorance of the financial realities of the music industry and those who toil daily to make a living in it. "All of the money they made from their touring and their record contracts" -- do you have any clue what you're talking about at ALL? Your remarks would be hilarious if they weren't so mean-spirited.

Have you considered a career in hatemongering talk radio? Because you've got the schtick totally down, my friend. It's uncanny.

Greg, "Anonymous", neither of you have the sense that God gave the common slug. Who cares how old she is? Since when does that have a single thing to do with being an astute observer of life? I doubt that anyone you could name has the ability to pull off a 12/8 riff in minor on an acoustic and fire off an accurate salvo at the NSA/SecState at the same time. Good Lord, what's wrong with people that they can't just leave something they have no interest in alone?

I take it you've heard nothing from Jill since "I Kissed A Girl", and that's too bad. The woman knows how to write a solid hook and couple it with a smartassed wisdom the likes of which recent pop tartlets can't even fantasize.
