The latest cool thing to bring back from Cuba (if you can get there) isn't a cigar but a painting.

On today's show, Ben Rodriguez-Cubenas, a collector and co-founder of the Cuban Artists Fund, talks about the hot market for art from the island nation.

Meanwhile, the Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, N.J., shares the images in the slideshow above. Its exhibit, "Cuba: Artists Experience Their Country," stays up through March 30.

If I remember correctly, you can only bring back $100 worth of goods when you travel on a Treasury Department-sanctioned trip to Cuba. When I went to Cuba in 2001 I had no problem bringing in the rum I bought because it was below the limit. I wonder how much art you could get for $100 or less nowadays - not that the majority of Americans who visit Cuba are doing so following the rules anyway....

This was an interesting interview, but really just represented this one guy's point of view about how much the American embargo is damaging Cuba. What about the fact that it is a dictatorship? It'd be nice to see more reporting on a topic like this. But it's interesting how much coverage Cuban art is getting these days. Just this weekend, the Wall Street Journal had a piece on Cuban Art. Coincidentally, Frontline/World also ran an excellent, in-depth piece on the topic last month. Their take was more informed and looked at how some artists had become superstars in Cuba, making a lot of money criticising the government and then selling their work to eager buys on the global market.
