Where Do You Hear Us?

So you know we tried something new, producing-wise, with the A-Block yesterday. (Or if you don't know that, listen to it here.) I'm fascinated by the conversation that experiment started; your comments are insightful and helpful to us as we figure out how best to evolve as a great news show.

Tell us more -- for example, HOW do you listen to us? Do you stream us live? (Why or why not?) Do you hear us on Sirius, or the radio? Do you prefer the podcast? Do you listen to the whole thing?

Oh, HERE. :) I listen to you from the West Coast via NPR page live stream.

I listen to the podcast, but am usually a day or two late in doing so because I'm not so good about keeping up with all of my podcasts. Enjoy the show when I do get around to it.

Sent by Anders P | 8:40 AM ET | 03-04-2008

So G'day from Australia :)

Just started listening live via the stream. Have just been following BPP via Twitter thus far.

Sent by Stephen Edgar | 8:45 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I stream. I was dnlding it as podcast but then a bunch of them would build up before I could listen. But I am thinking about dnlding at work. I don't own a radio.

Sent by jenny | 8:46 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to the podcast in my office. iTunes is kind enough to deliver it by 10am.

Sent by Colleen | 9:01 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to the podcast at work. I live in Holland so I'm always a day behind. When you guys are recording, I'm winding down my day. Since I don't work on Fridays, on Monday I get a double dose (yay!). I've been listening since the pilot and have hardly ever missed a show.

The podcast is handy since I can stop and start you (and rewind and fastforward you).

You guys are basically the last vestige of Americanism that I still have.

Sent by Nathan in Holland | 9:05 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I sometimes stream in the mornings, but mostly I catch your guys a little later in the car on Sirius, and of course, follow my bpp peeps on Twitter! :-)

Listen via Sirius Satellite Radio on my morning drive to work.

Sent by Richard Call | 9:13 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen via podcast (Zune delivers it about 11am) while I'm at work. I get to the office too late to listen to the live stream, and I'm OCD enough that I like to listen to the show in order all at once.

The GF listens to you on her Sirius on her drive in to work in the morning (she's not as OCD as I am).

Sent by G | 9:14 AM ET | 03-04-2008

merrily, merrily down the stream and sometimes podcast...so it gets to be listening in bits and pieces and occasional chunks!

Sent by jayn | 9:14 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I try to catch the NPR feed around 10am, but if I'm not at my computer I catch up via podcast sometimes as late as two days from the broadcast.

My wife and I switch cars throughout the week and only one has Sirius, so I typically forgo listening live entirely. I have tried the Sirius Web stream to listen live, but they only provide the first hour of the show and the audio quality is pretty terrible.

Sent by Mark | 9:25 AM ET | 03-04-2008

Mostly in the studio. Occasionally in my dreams and nightmares.

Sent by Ian Chillag, NPR | 9:26 AM ET | 03-04-2008

Good morning from sunny Trois-Rivi??res, Quebec, Canada.

I listen to the A block podcast every afternoon when I get back from school. Sometimes when I have a day off, I'll listen to the whole show streaming from one of your member stations online. I also follow you guys via Twitter and read everything that gets posted to the blog.

Even though the news on the show tends to be US-centric, the BPP is far superior to any news program that airs on Canadian public radio, and that's why I tune in.

Sent by Yanik | 9:30 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I start on the NPR live stream while I get ready for work. Every now and then it won't load, so I live stream one of the stations that carries the show. Later on I listen to the podcast, either at work or on my commute home.

I'd prefer to listen to the rest of the show live on my way into work, but the local stations here don't carry you. (I've written to my local program director to request that she add the show, but she's reluctant to change up their schedule, sadly.)

Sent by Maura | 9:36 AM ET | 03-04-2008

bpp podcasts make my hour and a half on the subway each morning so much more bearable. i only wish i wasn't always a day behind...

Sent by tehresa | 9:44 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I live in California, and listen to the A block podcast on the way to work. Sometimes I fast forward through segments I'm not interested in, which would be easier if you supported chapters. :)

Sent by Dylan | 9:48 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I currently live in Europe, so the show is live during the middle of the day for me. I listen to your podcast, usually the following morning, while I work out. The cheery nature of Alison and Rachel makes it a great morning show!

When I get back to the states, I would love to listen to the show live while I walk my dogs, but don't know how exactly to accomplish that...

Sent by Cori | 9:53 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen via the podcast.. I just wish there was an easy way to skip over a segment that doesn't interest me.

Sent by Michael | 9:54 AM ET | 03-04-2008

via podcasts, usually I listen while working in the evening at home...

Sent by Samuli | 9:59 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I started out hearing snippets of the BPP on the NPR Shuffle podcast. After piquing my interest for about a month or two, I've begun listening to the show at work via streaming audio from npr.org.

Sent by Bynum | 10:35 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen at work via the website. When I get to work in the morning, I visit npr.org, and start up the stream for this show and Morning Edition.

Sent by Krissy | 11:00 AM ET | 03-04-2008

Maybe someday KUT will pick up the show, but right now it's all podcast. I listen in the late morning (after the day's show is up by 10am) at work on my iTunes while I go about my business. I actually preferred it when it was all one long podcast instead of the current hour split format.

Sent by eliz. | 11:02 AM ET | 03-04-2008

Streaming for me! i wait every morning for 9am so that i can start the show, and then pause and replay etc at various point over the morning while i'm working.

Sent by eli | 11:22 AM ET | 03-04-2008

I used to check it out streaming, but work caught on and blocked the port. Now at work, I check out the podcast of the previous day. Ha the man will never win.

Sent by Javi | 12:12 PM ET | 03-04-2008

It's my first online listen at work in the morning. This is a great alternative to Morning Edition, which I listen to in the car on my way to work, but enjoy the BPP perspectives on the same news. I actually prefer listening to the news as a podcast, not a live stream, because I can pause as necessary.

Sent by nina | 12:13 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen while doing yoga -- which makes it a little difficult -- in the mornings. I end up not listening to the top of the news bits b/c I have already read the newspaper. Change always wigs me out...but the extended lede didn't kill me.

Sent by megan | 12:27 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to the program via Sirius satellite radio on my way to work. Thanks to LA traffic I can listen to most of the show during my 10-mile commute.

Sent by Doug | 12:40 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen in the car on the way to work via Sirius, then park and run run run upstairs to catch the rest of the program on NPR.org. I'm addicted to the BPP.

Sent by Meredith | 12:45 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I stream you live if I am up that early. Otherwise I listen to the whole show throughout the morning, pausing for conference calls. If Alison starts talking in her baby voice during an interview I sometimes skip to the next segment.

Sent by Emily | 12:58 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I download the podcast every morning and listen on my ipod at work. I'm in Hawaii so it's available through itunes by the time I leave for work. I usually listen to the whole thing but occassionaly I'll skip through some segments I don't care about (usually the music guests)

Sent by Molly | 1:06 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen at work via npr.org here in Hawaii as soon as I get to work. And I keep up with all your tweets. It's a great alternative to Morning Edition.

Sent by Charlie (mergecross) | 1:33 PM ET | 03-04-2008

Generally, I hear all or part of the second hour on Sirius (I have a Tivoli satellite radio on my nightstand, which wakes me up at 8 a.m.) and then I pick up the rest of the show via the podcast, which I listen to while running afternoon errands, walking the dog, etc.

Sent by Stewart | 1:50 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to morning edition on WRVO, Oswego, NY. The listen 10 a.m. to noon to streaming of KUT. Then back to WRVO for Fresh Air and Day 2 Day. THEN, BPP podcast at 2 p.m. EDT. The WRVO for ATC.

Yes, it is an addiction.

Sent by David Hollis, Hamilton, NY | 2:00 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I dl the podcast everyday. I'm in California and start my days late in the morning, so I can get the podcast in time to listen while I get ready for the day and listen to the rest at night. So BPP wakes me up and puts me to sleep.

Sent by Fern | 2:26 PM ET | 03-04-2008

For those of you who are Sirius listeners: If you weren't listening to us in the morning, what would you listen to instead on satellite?

Sent by Sharon Hoffman, NPR | 2:29 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to the podcast at work, which is great, except I'm always a day behind. And unfortunately for me, I screwed up the headphone jack on my iPod and for the past month I've only been able to enjoy the BPP out of my left earbud.

Sent by Jesse | 3:43 PM ET | 03-04-2008

Sharon: actually, I moved the Tivoli from the living room into the bedroom specifically so I could listen to the BPP in the morning. I didn't listen to anything in the morning before that. Maybe one of the local college radio stations.

Sent by Stewart | 3:43 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to the podcast every morning at work. I like the podcast because I can pause when I leave the office or when the phone rings. I usually listen to podcasts throughout my day, but the BPP gets first billing every morning.

Sent by Alex | 4:55 PM ET | 03-04-2008

Greetings from Norway... I'm a big bpp junkie. I especially love the entertaining and informative banter among the bpp crew. I got hooked during the gray winter months listening on my ipod while trekking about Oslo. Now I listen to the days show via the web while I prepare dinner.

Sent by Claudia | 5:12 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen on Sirius! Hooray for Sirius having NPR. My partner has XM in his car (not his choice) and hates it...

Sent by ROMatt | 5:23 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I'm a Canadian doing hard time (2-3 years) in Michigan for love. My husband gave me Sirius for Christmas and while I was already "NPR'ing it" in the morning, it was Morning Edition. It was only when he forgot to connect my regular radio back that I was stuck finding other radio chatter to fill my 45 minute daily commute from the burbs. Luckily, I stumbled upon the BPP and have been hooked ever since!! Let's here it for technological booboos!

Sent by Juli | 8:40 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I listen to the podcast on my long commute (a day behind), or the night of if I'm going out somewhere (subway entertainment) or at the gym. Lately the podcast has come in two hour segments and the second hour appears to repeat much of the first hour - is this supposed to happen?

Sent by angelina | 9:39 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I get to work in time to be 20 minutes late for the start of the show, listening via npr.org's streaming ability. After a recording of the morning's show goes up on the website at 9am (my time), I listen to the 20 minutes I missed plus anything I might have missed doing all those office-type things that need doing.

I'd love to keep up with bpp-ers on Twitter but it frightens me. I may be a young 'un but I totally don't need yet another computer related addiction.

And a moment of silence for Gary Gygax.

Sent by Sarah Lee | 10:19 PM ET | 03-04-2008

I stream the BPP in the evening after work.

Sent by Steve Petersen | 10:51 PM ET | 03-04-2008

Listening from 5am to 7am on KXOT (KUOW2) in HD radio. KXOT seems to have more hipster shows and has BBC hourly updates vs. NPR hourly updates. If I miss it, I sync the iPhone and listen while working in the late morning because the KUOW local shows are.. well.. boring. I much prefer BPP now to morning edition which seems to be skewing to baby boomer audiences.

I've been pondering the relationship between some of the alt.NPR podcasts I ran across a few weeks back and the BPP. I would be in happyland if BPP and shows like these formed a podcast like schedule wrapped up in a groovy Web 2.0 website that breaks the boring template molds for sites on NPR.org.

Another suggestion. Ping the iTunes folks and see if they can add podcast downloading features for commuters to the next version of the Mobile iTunes on iPhones and iPod touch. You stop to get coffee or your bus / train has wifi and you grab the hour blocks to be ready to listen to during the restbof the commute or perhaps during lunch. Using Podcast Producer and/or GarageBands podcast maker to add time and titles to segments would help the podcast usability.

I listen via podcast on my iPod, usually when I'm cooking, sewing, cleaning, or traveling. Podcast is the only way I can get you guys here in the Heart of Texas.

Sent by CJ | 11:01 AM ET | 03-05-2008

I listen to the A block via podcast. It's odd how it's sent, in that when I first refresh iTunes, I get the 16min version, but if I don't listen to it before refreshing again around 11am, I get a longer version including the Ramble, but not consistently.

Hello from Atlanta. I stream BPP and Morning Edition from the NPR website at work.

Sent by Xana | 12:24 PM ET | 03-05-2008

ipod also from ATL. I love you guys.

Sent by Anne | 3:37 PM ET | 03-05-2008

Sirius satellite radio, live in the AM. Think you guys are great...and your intro song rocks...but, I have a major complaint: we need a few uninterrupted bass thumps before you start the broadcast! In response to Sharon Hoffman's question: "If you weren't listening to us in the morning, what would you listen to instead on satellite?" Diane Rehm or Fresh Air.

Sent by Chris, Pittsburgh PA | 7:37 AM ET | 03-06-2008

I listen via podcast. Have you started only podcasting the first hour of the show? I like listening to the whole show. I live in California and dl around 8:00am

Sent by Claire Coman | 9:18 AM ET | 03-07-2008

@claire We're still broadcasting the whole show, but in two parts -- the first hour and the second -- in an effort to get some it out there faster. Are you not seeing the second hour?

Sent by Laura Conaway, NPR | 9:29 AM ET | 03-07-2008

Live in Paris, so only way is by internet (alas, apparently still known at BPP at the Interwebs, despite the departure of the Burbanks). I podcast, and have a problem with the naming of the mp3 files at NPR. It makes no sense, and so the best way for me to keep things clear is to download all BPPs for a week at once (which puts me behind schedule) to avoid mixing them up with other NPR stuff. Even then it's not so good, because the BPPodcasts (cute, huh?) are not in order... Can't y'all use a more normal (chronological) naming system?
