Linkfest: Starbucks Launching "Everyday" Coffee

In hopes to reinvigorate their business, Starbucks will introduce a new, everyday brew called Pike Place Roast.

"It is the best coffee that we have created, maybe, in our history," CEO Howard Schultz said on a call with reporters on Monday.

Starbucks will be giving out free cups of the new coffee at stores nationwide, starting at noon Eastern.

It's the BPP's Most.

Okay, I'm outing myself on this whole "rickrolling" topic. I LOVE "Never Gonna Give You Up." Always have, always will. As a rock critic, I'm supposed to hate this sort of thing, but on the other hand, I'm a rock critic who has said in print more than once that ABBA's "Dancing Queen" is the greatest song of all time. But come on: the guy had a great voice, the tune is super-catchy, and as far as bad '80s production and arrangement choices go, there are far worse offenders. The Stock/Aitken/Waterman
production and songwriting team had quite a run there in the late '80s (Kylie Minogue's "I Should Be So Lucky," Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round" and Bananarama's "I Heard a Rumour" were other goodies by them), and I think you've gotta give them credit for creating a song so monumentally
fluffy that 20 years later, it's being used as a punchline instead of just being forgotten.

So I fully support the Mets adopting "Never Gonna Give You Up." But I should point out that I'm saying this as a Red Sox fan.

Starbucks must wake up and realize their problems are NOT about the coffee. The market for coffee shops and gourmet prepared coffee is nearly saturated, and being overrun with mass competitors. Starbucks has to find new places to compete. Its forays into sandwiches, other merchandise, music production, movie production and star agency were the kinds of things that could save the company - and now Mr. Schulz is tearing those down to invest in a slugfest which will only drive down margins.
