In July of 2010, the wonderful and amazing year-long journey called the Bernstein Project, at the Southbank Centre in London, culminated in two incredible performances of Leonard Bernstein's eclectic, religion-defying Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players and Dancers.
As Festival Artistic Director, I had the opportunity to experience the growth and development of these final concerts over the entire year, watching and working with the hundreds of participants as they struggled to master Bernstein's challenging rhythms, pitches, and text.
With 500 participants — only seven of whom were professionals — taking part in Mass, the end result was an enormous celebration of the human spirit. And that's exactly what Bernstein intended!
