Your Turn: Spider Jerusalem

From Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson
Nominated by Max Gartman

Spider is a journalist. [Note: Strong language, possibly NSFW, at that link.] He is the Warrior of Truth. Nothing will stand in his way: not enemies, friends, loved ones, not his own life. He rushes into war zones and police riots and historical reservations to tell the truth and tell it slant. He will not accept being lied to.

When I first read Transmetropolitan, my mind was blown away. I finally knew what I wanted for my future. I wanted to be standing next to Spider at the top of the mountain, telling the truth of all, no matter how much it hurt. He battled through riot and deception and martial law to teach anyone who would listen that all evil needs for success is the indifference of good men. I wear this upon my heart and say it to everyone who will listen. Spider knows.

Hmmm...

While I DO love Warren Ellis' Spider Jerusalem and his constant search for the Truth, I do feel that he would be a little too racy for NPR.

Granted, he is the epitome of a man who I think we have not found in the 21st century yet -- he's the man who doesn't care about politics, doesn't care about societal rules and regulations and doesn't care (maybe most importantly, or not) about YOU -- but I don't think everyone's ready for him.

I love Spider and his frothing, seething rage, but I'm not sure NPR would feel the same.

Amber, we represent NPR too. And I also love Spider Jerusalem.

What is 'In Character'?

The classic bad girl. The mad scientist. The wise-cracking sidekick. In Character is an NPR series exploring famous American fictional characters, from Atticus Finch to Ugly Betty. What do they say about society? About individual experience? About the comedy and complexity of who we are? Join us, online and on the air, as we ask what makes them tick — and what that means for us.

For more details on this project, read our FAQ and Discussion Guidelines. Or just go ahead and submit your own In Character essay.
