From the Tarzan books by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Nominated by Chris Langlois
All I really needed to know, I learned from Tarzan. In the 1950s, Tarzan was my hero. I loved cowboys too, but they relied mostly on guns and horses. What fascinated me about Tarzan was his near nakedness in the face of mortal danger. All he ever fought with were a knife, his muscles, and his wits. Wow!
From the Ape Man, I learned that survival can depend on awareness of your environment, that danger lurks everywhere. And, sure enough, the importance of the environment remains crucial today. Of course, the dangers are more likely to be toxins than lions.
I also learned that being physically strong and building endurance was essential for survival when leopards jump out of the jungle at you. Undeterred by the fact that small towns in Vermont offered few leopards, I knew that I was in better shape than my peers. And I still am.
