A Peek Behind the Curtain: Why are NPR Comments down?

In order to update NPR.org, we occasionally have to take features down. Today we need to take comments (and profiles, and other tools that are related to comments) down for about 2 hours. We are planning to do it at 2pm. Comments will be unavailable from 2-4 p.m. ET (barring any disasters).

We try to schedule down time in between big news events. But, you may have noticed, we've had a lot of news lately. In the last two days, we've delayed this community upgrade for:

  • The Grammys
  • President Obama's news conference
  • Unrest in the Middle East
  • Details of the President's budget proposal

So, when you see this message:

We've temporarily shut down our comments and other social media tools for a system upgrade. They should be back up shortly. Thank you for your patience!

Know that we tried to pick the best time in the day to pull this off – and we'll get them back up as soon as we can.
