Elizabeth Edwards' health has reportedly deteriorated, with her doctors ruling out further treatment.

Edwards, 61 years old and the estranged wife of 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards, has been open about her cancer which started in a breast and later spread. Her family issued a statement which is on the Raleigh News Observer Web site.

The cancer was discovered shortly after the 2004 election. The couple separated after her husband, the former senator from North Carolina, admitted in 2008 to having an affair with a woman he met during his run for the 2008 presidential nomination. Earlier this year, Edwards admitted he fathered a child in the relationship.

A lawyer by training, Elizabeth Edwards has three children, ranging in age from 28 to 10. Her oldest child was killed in a 1996 car accident.

The Associated Press reports:

The family issued a statement Monday that revealed her doctors' diagnosis. It said she is resting at home with family and friends.

The wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards posted on
her Facebook page that she can't express the love and gratitude she
feels to those who've supported and inspired her. She wrote ``the
days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered.''
