Camp David worked for the Israeli and Egyptian peace negotiators back in 1978 who reached an historic accord there. But that was then.

President Obama was apparently considering inviting congressional debt-ceiling negotiators to the presidential retreat in Maryland's Cacoctin Mountain Park this weekend to work on reaching a final deal, according to reports.

Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, however, essentially said thanks but no thanks. And the California Democrat who preceded him in the House's top job, Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi, wasn't very keen on the idea, either.

Michael Steel, Boehner's spokesman, issued the following terse statement:

"The Speaker has told the White House he sees no need to go to Camp David this weekend."

At her weekly news conference, Pelosi shot down the idea as well:

PELOSI: The only thing I hope he doesn't ask us to do is go to Camp David. That goes beyond the pale. (Laughter.) Driving down the streets for these meetings is one thing.

I want that to be his preserve, a place where he — a president can go to renew, to study, to prepare for the next week. I want it to be a place where a president takes heads of state, to close out all other concerns and stay focused on resolving a global problem. I don't want it to be a place where the president has to continue to listen to some of this stuff.
