For my first photo essay in Knight Training, I visited the ceramics studio at Glen Echo Park in Maryland. Students there were generous enough to let me photograph them while they worked at their potters' wheels in the very cramped but magical yurt. --AW
One early morning, I headed down to the DC fish market to snap photos for the Knights in Training project. You might think I would find boats and fisherman. Instead, I captured workmen unloading trucks and getting fish from the back fridges.
I love books. So, I went to one of my favorite bookstore in Washington D.C. for my first Knight Training assignment. Second Story Books is a used bookstore just off Dupont Circle. You never know what you'll find there and that's probably why I like it so much.

During the Bush administration protestors frequently took to the National Mall to demonstrate their opposition to the Iraq War. Proving that protesting isn't just for the Left, tens of thousands of anti-government protestors demonstrated at the National Mall on Saturday. Make no mistake, though. This was not so much anti-government rally as it was an anti-Obama festival. Obama's proposed overhaul of the healthcare system was concern number one but protestors also were very vocal in their opposition to everything else Obama has done. Even more than not liking his policies they seem to just not like him him. More than one protestor held up signs calling for Obama's immediate impeachment. And who should be his replacement? One popular suggestion was FOX News host Glenn Beck.
Whenever I have a hankerin' for bacon-egg-and-cheese-on-a-bagel, I head across the street to Cafe Phillips. I've become something of a regular there. If I decide to get a waffle, the cashier always asks if I want my usual whipped cream on top. This week, I brought my camera and snapped a few pictures of the staff at work.
I work at NPR West in Culver City, CA, and it's been a very dry summer in California. I can't remember the last time I felt rain. Since I'm from Seattle I love rain. So, I was happy to feel a gentle mist of rain today in Washington. As I walked to the National Zoo today from Adams Morgan I snapped this picture of traffic below me from the bridge where I was standing.
Normally I scold my husband when he rowdies up the kids just before bedtime. But when mommy needed to practice shooting on the Canon 10, it was me who got them going. First with ice cream -- what else could get them to stop asking to "see my picture" and concentrate on something else? And then they jumped around while I tried to take pictures that would blur.
I went to Adams Morgan, a lively neighborhood in Washington, DC, and stopped by The Diner. It's one of my favorite places to go for an omelet. I had a hearty meal, and while I was there, I took a few pictures. There's quite a few characters there, like these two, working behind the bar.
These two are regularly working behind the bar at The Diner where the motto is: "Serving early birds, night owls, and everyone in between."

Two of the 'early birds' who work at The Diner.

This week as part of my first Knight training assignment I decided to take photos of my son while getting a blood test. When I mentioned that this was the premiss, everyone was so concerned. They said "did he scream and fight when the nurse stuck him?" ; I said of course not, he's a pro. And no one believed me. But I had a photo to prove it.
After making the dough, covering it with cheese and slipping it into a brick oven, our Pizza Man takes a moment to reflect. He quickly shifts back into high gear to wait on anxious and hungry customers.
This pizza man in Washington DC was a bit hesitant to have his photo taken but finally agreed.

You never know who you'll meet at the Joy of Motion Dance Studio in Washington, DC. This woman is well into her 70's, and loves to show off her body, and her moves. She has seven grandchildren, and takes a dance class every day of the week. Today it's Broadway Jazz. She modeled in high school, and wishes that she had done her makeup a little more attentively for this shot.
